Agriculture and rural economies are confronting a defining challenge of our time. Climate change, water scarcity, land degradation, biodiversity loss, food insecurity, market volatility, and rapid rural transformation are placing unprecedented pressure on farming communities and food systems. Yet these challenges also create opportunities to rethink how we produce food, manage natural resources, build rural economies, and strengthen the resilience of communities.
For the September 2026 issue, The Agricultural Economist invites original contributions under the theme:
“Resilient Futures: Climate Action, Food Security, and Sustainable Rural Economies”
September's international observances including the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer (16 September), World Bamboo Day (18 September), International Day of Peace (21 September), World Tourism Day (27 September), and the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (29 September) provide an important opportunity to examine the interconnected challenges facing agriculture, rural communities, food systems, and the environment.
This special issue will explore how climate action, sustainable agriculture, food-system transformation, rural diversification, and inclusive development can work together to create productive, resilient, and sustainable rural futures.
We particularly welcome contributions that connect research with practice and provide evidence-based analysis, innovative perspectives, practical solutions, and actionable policy recommendations for policymakers, researchers, development practitioners, entrepreneurs, farmers, and rural communities.

The future of agriculture will be shaped not only by how much food we produce, but by how resiliently, sustainably, and inclusively we produce it. Climate change is altering production conditions, food insecurity continues to threaten vulnerable populations, and rural economies are being reshaped by technological, demographic, environmental, and market forces.
The September issue of The Agricultural Economist seeks contributions that move beyond describing these challenges to identifying solutions that can work in real communities and real economies. Whether you are examining climate-smart farming, documenting a successful rural enterprise, analysing food-loss reduction, exploring bamboo-based livelihoods, evaluating agricultural policies, investigating rural tourism, studying climate finance, or presenting an innovative approach to food security, we invite you to share your evidence and ideas.
Your research, experience, and perspective can help turn climate challenges into opportunities for stronger food systems, more prosperous rural communities, and a more sustainable future. Together, let us build resilient futures, where climate action strengthens food security, rural economies create shared prosperity, and agriculture works in harmony with people and nature.
